This piece uses Celtic interlacing to form a circular brooch. Within the weaving there appears to be four small hearts which are knotted together to create a unique Celtic knot called the "Four Marys" love knot in Scotland.
The design was made for Mary, Queen of Scots and her three ladies in waiting - all named Mary and lifelong friends.
This brooch incorporates Celtic Interlacing, with its "overs and unders" representing the "ups and downs" of life; and the unbroken continuity of the endless ribbon symbolizes the hope of eternal life. As such, they are considered by many as a talisman of long life.
