Description

Sterling silver pendant that is a replica of an Irish Penal Crucifix Cross - handmade in Dublin, Ireland.

The “penal crosses” of Ireland – as they are widely known – are among the most distinctive types of crucifix to have been created anywhere in the world.

The beauty of the Penal cross is the deep history of Christian symbols on the piece. Here are some that you will see on this pendant:

The year on the back of the cross, 1829, is significant because Catholic Emancipation was introduced in Ireland during that year. A special time for Irish Catholics. The letters IHS, a symbol for the name of Jesus, are engraved on the back with a cross.  Below the IHS
symbol is a representation of the three nails used in the crucifixion

On the front of the cross a number of symbols are carved. Above Christ’s head are three stars, indicating the sun, moon and stars representing the total eclipse that took place at the time of the Crucifixion. Next to Christ's arms are the vinegar jug used on his wounds and the pincers used to remove the nails. On the sides are the ladder used to take down the body of Christ and on the opposite side is the spear used to pierce Christ’s side. All of these symbols are directly related to the Passion.

The cock, or rooster, that is depicted at the bottom of Penal cross is a cock above a pot, known as the ‘Cock and the Pot’ and is a reference to a story in the apocryphal Gospel of
Nicodemus.

Handmade by internationally recognized Dublin artist, Aidan Breen, who has completed commissioned pieces for the National Museum of Ireland's permanent collection. Mr. Breen has been creating artisan jewelry since 1978. You can own a piece of true Irish art and history - A beautiful artisan piece that will become your favorite go-to piece. Stunning!

Hallmarked with 925 and the artist initials "AJB" on the back. Dublin Assay hallmark.

2 1/4" x 3/4" on an 18" chain. Comes in a gift box with card from artist.
