The model for these earrings comes from the Germanic Iron Age and was found on the Danish island of Bornholm. It dates to the 6th century A.D. This style of jewelry appear exclusively in Scandinavia and were very common in the Germanic Iron Age with 3,000 finds in Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
The hsitoric design often shows a pair of lovers embracing or a kissing couple, which is interpreted as a fertility motif or as an image of a pair of gods.
The first figurines were created in the Germanic Iron Age from around 375 and continued to be used until the Viking Age, with the heyday of the style reaching its peak in the Vendel period between 550 and 800 AD.
