So how did the shamrock become an emblem of Ireland?
During the 17th century, the shamrock became a symbol for Ireland's patron saint and was adopted by the Volunteers of 1777 in the late 18th century. It gained wider popularity in the 19th century with Nationalist movements. Today, it is a recognizable emblem of Ireland, often included in weddings and part of the tradition of "drowning the shamrock."
